ABC News Post

From ABC News Radio

A new series called Speakeasy featuring in-depth interviews with a number of famous music stars, including Carlos Santana, John Mellencamp, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Chic’s Nile Rodgers, premiered earlier this month on select public television stations. Each episode runs an hour long and focuses on one artist who converses about various topics with a personally chosen interviewer.
Santana chose singer, actor and civil-rights activist Harry Belafonte to conduct his interview, Mellencamp selected Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, Waters picked TV journalist Bill Weir and Rodgers called on veteran songwriter Valerie Simpson. The Rodgers episode already has begun airing, having premiered on January 4. The shows were taped in front of a live audience at the McKittrick Hotel in New York City.

“Artists of this caliber have probably done thousands of interviews throughout their careers, answering the same questions over and over again,” says Speakeasy creator Don Maggi in a statement. “The beauty of the Speakeasy format enables a level of comfort for them, which in turn stimulate a unique, compelling and topical conversation that we wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to hear.”
